    Buying from the little guy
Some of you may know that I occasionally smoke pipes and cigars. Cigars can be an expensive luxury. As a result I'm always looking for a good deal. To make a long story short I ended up in contact with a seller who goes by the online name 757habano that was offering many cigars for less than half the normal internet retail price. It seemed like too good a deal so I did a little digging and found reviews that said he was a legitimate seller. So I placed a $25 order.

My order arrived today and it was completely infested with tobacco beetles. My order consisted of 11 cigars and 3 tins of mini cigars. Each of the tins had major damage from the beetles and the dead shells of beetles. I ended up simply throwing all the tins away. Some of the mini cigars looked like they might have been okay, but their neighbors were so badly damaged that I didn't want to risk that they were infested. Of the 11 cigars only 4 appeared undamaged (all 4 were from the same manufacturer, I'm betting he only recently got them into his inventory). Even so I'm going to need to freeze them before I put them into my humidor to make sure any eggs are dead.

The only good news... The 4 cigars that should be okay would cost me around $6 each at a local tobacco shop, so in the end I really didn't loose any money.

I'm just glad that I decided to inspect them carefully before bringing them home. If I hadn't noticed the beetles before putting the cigars into my home humidor, my entire cigar stock could be infested by the time I get back from Chicago at the end of next week.

    Another Great Display
A wedding display in River Falls Wisconsin. Once again we achieved perfect continuity test on the first try. The display went quite well, but we did have a few interesting situations come up. We were setting up and firing from the driving range of a gulf course, and at around 6pm a couple guys came and started hitting balls on the driving range... What the hell!?!?

The other problem that came up is that during the shoot on either side of the driving range were people involved in "Glow Gulf" Which involved playing gulf with glow-in-the-dark balls and having the green and whole marked with chem-light sticks. So we had to take precautions to make sure they didn't wander too close to the display.

The junky has had his fix: The first display of the year
Yesterday was my first full fireworks display this year. A wedding display at the Lafayette Country Club in Minnetonka Beach. It was a small display consisting of about 200 effects and only lasted around 11 minutes. That said it was a lot of fun, and dispute the aches and pains that follow a shoot, I have a real feeling of contentment today. And I've still got the glow of pride from our boss saying we are spoiling her by having the entire show pass continuity-check (an electronic check that indicates if the fireworks are properly wired) on the first try for the 3rd show in a row (as a general rule passing continuity-check on the first try almost never happens).

    Make go BOOM!
On May 8th I had pyro training and had a bunch of funny blowing things up (and spent a bunch of time board out of my mind in classroom training).

This weekend I have my first real shoot. It's a private shoot on Minnetonka Beach. It will be small, but I'm sure it'll be fun.

When the good guy isn't so good
So I've been watching a lot of Battlestar Galactica lately. I like the show, but there is one aspect of it that I find hard to reconcile. One thing that makes the show have a very real feel to it is that their are no really good "good guys". All the main characters have very real personality flaws. Addictions, tempers, arrogance, jealousy, self righteousness and prejudice are all in abundance. As I said this makes the show more believable. But it also makes it harder to watch. If I wanted to watch a TV program showing how fucked up people are I'd watch the news. When watching TV for pleasure I think I prefer my good guys less believable and more good (think Buffy or Stargate).

    ebay Feedback
I recently read this load of BS which is so focused on doing what was best for the seller that it made me sick and decided someone should speak up from a buyer point of view about what ebay feedback really means to the buyers. To put it simply if you as a seller want the rewards that come with having over a 4.5 average, you have to earn it by being an exceptional seller. An athlete doesn't get a lucrative commercial contract for getting a bronze medal. I think the best way to do this would be to explain what a seller has to do to earn 5 stars from me on each of the items.

EDIT: Oh and "contact me before leaving less than 5 stars" sounds okay in theory, but the simple fact is that if you don't send me a tracking number, or if the item takes 5 weeks to arrive, THEIR IS NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT. It already happened, you can't undo it, and I'm not going to pretend it didn't happen no matter what you say.

Item Description: This is probably the most ambiguous to me. So here is how I view it: It's not just a matter of whether or not the item is as the seller describes it. If a seller lists "Orange handled scissors" and I get a pair of pinking sheers with orange handles, technically that description was accurate. So what I am looking for to give 5 stars is both accuracy and completeness. "Klein brand, 6 inch, pinking sheers, with orange plastic handles, new in retail packaging".
5 stars - The item was described in detail and the description was accurate
4 stars - The item was well described, but a stock picture was used so my item looked a little different than the picture in the auction
3 stars - There was no real description of the item, just a name and a picture. I only bought it because I knew exactly what I was looking for.
    2 stars - I don't think I've ever used this.
1 star - The item I received simply doesn't match the description in the auction (odds are I'll be wanting an exchange or refund).

    Communication:
5 stars - I receive auction notices and a shipment tracking number (and any emails I send are responded to in under 3 days)
4 stars - I receive auction notices but no shipment tracking number (and any emails I send are responded to in under 3 days)
3 stars - Auction goes fine but I never get any notices from the seller
2 stars - Responding to an email I send between 3 and 5 days after I sent it
1 star - Not responding to an email I send within 5 days

Shipping Time: I have a good idea of shipping times. For the continental U.S. once a package is given to the shipper it almost always arrives in 5 business days or less. For international the norm is between 14 and 21 days.

    Stars Days U.S. Days International
5 stars - less than 5 days U.S or less than 12 days international
    4 stars - 5-7 days U.S. or 12-18 days international
    3 stars - 7-10 days U.S. or 18-24 days international
2 stars - 10-14 days U.S. or 24-30 days international (this usually means it took the seller more than 7 days after auction close to put the package in the mail)
1 star - more than 14 days U.S. or more than 30 days international (these times are just not acceptable)

    Shipping & Handling Charges:
5: Free shipping AND the item is still competitively priced (if your item costs $7 more than everyone else, but shipping is free, I probably wont buy from you).
4: Actual price to ship the item. I have a good idea of what real shipping charges are, if your charges are no more than what it really costs to ship an item you get 4 stars.
3: You added a handling fee. You decided you didn't want the price of bubble wrap to come out of your profits so you decided to add a couple bucks to the shipping price. Ok, I can understand it, but I don't have to like it.
2: You want your item to appear cheaper than everyone else's, but you don't want to cut into your profit, so you're shipping fee is $5 or $10 higher than the actual cost of shipping and your item is $5 or $10 cheaper than everyone else's. Believe it or not, most of us aren't that stupid and think your being an idiot.
1: Your selling pocket knives for $0.01 and charging $17 shipping. We all know that your making all your money with the shipping charges so why be such an jerk. Don't worry too much, since I'll never buy from you, you'll never get this rating from me.

    Need Coasters
I need some coasters for work. Something simple or very plane and at least semi-masculine. If anyone has anything like that they are willing to part with, I'd appreciate it. Other wise I'll pick something up at Target.

    "I cracked the encryption"
When watching TV crime dramas you will often see the electronic forensics experts announce that they've made a major breakthrough in the case by cracking the encryption on a computer or hard drive. I can't help but wonder what the hell kind of encryption these people are using. The fact of the matter is that unless these people are using the crappiest encryption software on the planet or they are completely clueless about choosing passwords, modern private encryption software such as TrueCrypt or PGP are all but impossible to crack. Using the most advanced computers in existence it would take years to crack the encryption routines used.

The simple fact is that even the most advanced forensics labs in the country are incapable of breaking the kind of encryption used by modern software.

    Huh?
So I'm using some software to defragment my hard drive at work. It's drive map shows that about 30% of the sectors of the disk that have data on them contain fragmented files. But it considers the disk 1.2% fragmented. I'd love to know how they come up with a number like that.

    Writer's Block: Pet central

Some animal rights activists are fighting to replace the term 'owner' with 'guardian' to convey a more balanced relationship between a person and her or his pet. Do you agree or disagree with the importance of this mission?

LOL!!! Some people have too much time on their hands. As long as pets (or animals of any kind) are bought and sold, they are property, so they are owned, and the person that owns them is an owner.

    Reality in movies
Just watched Angles and Demons. Just for the fun of it I calculated the effects of .25g of anti-matter. They were almost right... In the movie they said it'd be equivalent to a 5 kilo-ton explosion. Not quite, they did the math, but they forgot that when anti-matter explodes it annihilates both the anti-matter and an equivalent quantity of matter. The actual power of .25g of anti-matter being released means .5g of material being annihilated resulting in an 11 Kilo-ton explosion ( 5.4 kilo-ton per .25g of material annihilated).

For something rather amusing, if their helicopter was at max altitude (about 3 miles) the 11 kilo-ton explosion would result in almost exactly the kind of blast shock wave as was shown in the square, but the blast wave of a 5 kilo-ton explosion would do little more than mess up peoples hair. However, what they don't touch on is that the radiation effects would be rather extreme.

As a whole I was very impressed with the accuracy of the science here. It seems like they had someone around that at least tried to get it right, which is a lot more than Hollywood usually does.

    Car window fixed
Rather than playing games and spending a bunch of time trying to find a good deal on a used window, we decided to just buy a new window. We're $200 down but at least I'm not freezing my ears off as I drive around. It's more than a little annoying that some jerk broke a $200 window to steal a GPS thats only worth about $30.

    Buying direct pros and cons
To those "in the know" about ebay one useful aspect is that their are a lot of sellers from China that list items very inexpensively. Example: a set a multi-meter test leads for $3 (including shipping), I couldn't find a similar set for less than $9.99 at a store here in the U.S. Or $24.99 for a Wii remote that costs $49.99 here.

Unfortunately it's still not a perfect deal. For one, it can take an awful long time for items to come from China. Don't even bother ordering items using ground shipping. Waiting for something to come from China via a boat takes months. Air mail isn't that much better, I'm still waiting on those test leads I paid for on Feb. 8th. And in my experience the Q/C isn't that great, about 1 in 10 items tend to work less than perfectly.

But as a whole a lot of money can be saved if your willing to wait.

    BeeZid is a scam
Please no one use this service, these are not auctions at all. In fact it's a lot more like gambling than an auction.

It's more like buying raffle tickets, and the last person to buy a ticket wins the right to buy the item at a lower price. With each ticket that's sold the "auction" timer has 20 to 40 seconds added to it so no matter how much money you spend on raffle tickets you are NEVER guaranteed winning. The result, you can spend a nearly unlimited amout of money and get nothing at all in return for it.
